To keep pace with global advancements in semiconductor photonics and to meet the growing demand for advanced technological talent, the Department of Optics and Photonics at National Central University (NCU) announced that its current “Master Program in Lighting and Display Sciences” will be officially renamed the “Master Program in Semiconductor Photonics Technology” beginning in Academic Year 2026 (NCU AY 115). The program will admit a total of 30 students, including 22 through the recommendation-based admission and 8 through the entrance examination, marking a significant step forward in the department’s continued develop in semiconductor photonics research and education.
Department Chair Prof. Ko-Ting Cheng stated that semiconductor photonics is a key area driving global technological innovation. The new program name more accurately reflects the department’s core academic strengths and curriculum design, while also enhancing international visibility and academic exchange. Through close collaboration with industry partners, the program will continue to cultivate students with both research expertise and practical application skills, helping them build global perspectives and competitive advantages.
The revised curriculum will include core required courses such as Fourier Optics, Crystal Optics, Silicon Photonics, and Optoelectronic Semiconductor Physics and Devices, complemented by a diverse array of elective courses tailored to various specialization tracks. This curriculum structure balances theoretical foundations with forward-looking practical applications, ensuring that students are well-prepared to align with emerging industry trends.
Looking ahead, the department will continue to integrate internal and external resources while expanding collaborations with international academic institutions and industry partners. The Master Program in Semiconductor Photonics Technology will not only strengthen advanced academic research but also provide fresh momentum for Taiwan’s semiconductor and photonics industries by cultivating professionals with global vision and interdisciplinary expertise.
