Perovskite solar cells have been a new rising photovoltaic technology in recent years. Compared to the mainstream silicon-based solar cells, perovskite cell has lower manufacturing cost and wider applications.. The Research Center for New Generation Photovoltaics at NCUhas leaded by professor Chun-Guey Wu has developed a new-generation perovskite solar module that can convert indoor light into power sufficient to charge a lithium battery. Results of the research have been published in February, 2016 on Nature Photonics, a top prestige journal of the photonic science.
A perovskite-based solar cell is the new favor of the photovoltaic community. Its sources of materials are rich, its manufacturing cost is low, and its energy-producing efficiency is almost equivalent and gradually coming closer to that of a silicon-based solar battery.
Director of the center Wu Chun-Guey indicated that the perovskite team has developed a cell with the power conversion efficiency of 18% under standard illumination condition. Under indoor light, cell with only 40 square centimeters size is sufficient to power a small fan, charge a smart phone or a lithium battery.
In the future, indoor spaces such as offices, households and public area perocskite solar module can generate power wherever there is a light, creating a cycle with endless energy generation. It can be combined with sensors to be used in the IOT, provides an infinite potential applications.
