Coinciding with the NCU centennial anniversary and 2015 International Year of Light, and under the planning of Taiwan IYL Committee and the Taiwan Photonics Society (TPS), the “International Year of Light (IYL) Einstein’s Light” designed by NCU’s DOP chair Professor Ching-Cherng Sun was launched on May 22nd in front of the Kwoh-Ting Optics & Photonic Building. The lighting ceremony is expected to shine a light on NCU’s and Taiwan’s futures and bring more understanding of optics and photonics to general people. Designer of the lantern, Professor Ching-Cherng Sun said that the base pyramid symbolizes civilization, and scientific research continues pushing the development of civilization and bring human to the modern world. The books represent knowledge, and the accumulation of knowledge produces brilliant scientists as featured by Albert Einstein. The formula E= hv represents the important milestone of optics and photonics while the huge light beam directed to the sky symbolizes the influence of light, with the pyramid demonstrating human civilization benefiting from light. TPS Chairman Ding-Ping Tsai said that with the coincidence of the NCU centennial anniversary and 2015 International Year of Light, he is honored to participate in both events and the success should be attributed to TPS Vice-Chairman, Professor Ching-Cherng Sun, who started designing last year to ensure success in 2015. The NCU President stated that although the first optical research began over one thousand years ago, recent advancements in optics and photonics research are among the main contributions of scientific research to culture and civilization. Besides scientific significance, the event also allows aspects of educational and cultural heritage. The Optoelectronic Faculty has also organized other science events and tagged NCU Optoelectronic International Year of Light Einstein’s Light – IYL on Facebook, and welcomes everyone to take part in the online event!
