On May 27, National Central University (NCU) and the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) in Norway signed a bilateral cooperation memorandum. Both institutions will leverage their respective expertise, connecting academic and research networks from both countries. The collaboration focuses on applying satellite remote sensing, ocean observation, and geophysical exploration technologies to polar research, climate teleconnections, and sustainable development. The agreement also promotes academic exchanges, offering opportunities for student and researcher visits and facilitating both academic advancement and public diplomacy.
In honor of Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen, a renowned Norwegian explorer from the late 19th century, and to acknowledge his extraordinary contributions to Arctic exploration, the NERSC was founded in 1986. The institution focuses on global environmental monitoring and sustainable development. In addition to its main center in Bergen, Norway, the NERSC operates five branch research centers around the globe. As part of the collaboration, the NERSC will annually host NCU students and researchers for short-term visits and share research vessel expeditions with Taiwanese scholars.
Following the signing ceremony, NCU President Jou Jing-Yang and his team visited the Bjerknes Center for Climate Research (BCCR) at the University of Bergen, where they were hosted by Director Helga (Kikki) Flesche Kleiven. The visit included presentations from both sides and discussions on potential collaborations in geological drilling techniques and sustainable green energy initiatives.
