VATICAN CITY– Pope Benedict XVI is marking the 400th ann iversary of Galileo’s use of a telescope.
Benedict said Sunday he wanted to salute all who are mark ing the 2009 anniversary and UNESCO’s World Year of Astron omy.
Speaking on the winter solstice, Benedict said understand ing the laws of nature can stimulate understanding and appr eciation of the Lord’s works.
The Catholic Church condemned Galileo in the 17th century for supporting Nicholas Copernicus’ discovery that the Ear th revolved around the sun; church teaching at the time pla ced Earth at the center of the universe.
In 1992, Pope John Paul II apologized, saying that the de nuncuation was a tragic error.(AP)

17世紀，羅馬教會譴責伽利略，因為哥白尼發現地球繞日而轉，而伽利略支持他。那時，根據教會的教義，地球位於宇宙中心。

1608年，荷蘭人發明的望遠鏡在歐洲各大城引起轟動。1609年，伽利略(1564─1642)發現市售望遠鏡的放大率最多只有5倍，沒有傳言中的神奇，便自行研發。那年11月，伽利略完成了一具當世最精良的望遠鏡，約有20倍；他用它揭開了科學史的新頁，成為掀起科學革命的先鋒。
伽利略透過望遠鏡發現了月球表面並不完美、木星也有4顆「月亮」、銀河裡有更多肉眼不可見的星星。於是他捲入了哥白尼之後的天文學大辯論。1633年，羅馬教廷判他無期徒刑；最後他過著軟禁的生活。
伽利略要求科學獨立於神學與哲學之外，他的下場是個悲劇。但是伽利略與教會的衝突，讓他的科學天才發光發熱，成就了科學。
